Head of Plant Instrumentation and Control Engineering

The SPARC tokamak will have a variety of plant-scale instrumentation and control systems that need to be designed and integrated, including large pulsed power systems, magnet and radio-frequency (RF) power supplies, cryogenic plant, and tokamak plasma operations.
This team member will:
- work within a multi-disciplinary team of physicists and engineers as part of collaborative sponsored research projects at the MIT Plasma Science and Fusion Center (PSFC);
- lead the engineering design team of I&C systems for the SPARC tokamak, including the instrumentation, PLCs, data handling, and network;
- ensure the design is completed in compliance with the Code of Record and established requirements;
- maintain interfaces with other engineering subsystems; and
- report on and be accountable for project progress to the head of SPARC design as well as have regular engagement with others in senior management.
The ideal candidate will have most, if not all, of these requirements:
- designed, built, and operated a variety of plant-scale I&C systems spanning multiple, integrated subsystems;
- led teams of I&C engineers through projects from conceptual design to completion under a QA program;
- experience with modern control techniques and strategies;
- an exceptional safety record and attention to detail;
- at least a bachelor's degree in a relevant engineering field (e.g., electrical);
- a minimum of 10 years of experience in leading design teams;
- familiarity in applying IEEE and IEC standards to design solutions;
- skill in modern computational design and engineering tools;
- an ability to clearly express and critique ideas;
- an emphasis on elegance and simplicity over complexity;
- a drive towards commercially-viable solutions;
- a history of thriving in fast-paced, dynamic environments; and
