Program Description:

The mission of Enterprise Information Technology (EIT) is to develop an enterprise-level, consolidated information technology infrastructure that provides exceptional IT capabilities to the Frederick National Labs for Cancer Research (NCI-Frederick/FNLCR) in support of basic, translational, and clinical cancer and AIDS research. The IT Operations Group (ITOG) is a part of Enterprise Information Technology (EIT) within Leidos Biomedical Research, Inc. ITOG is responsible for computational servers, storage servers, virtual machine infrastructure, and the FNLCR network. ITOG focuses on implementing enterprise IT best practices in the areas of computational services, storage, backup, and archiving; batch and application support; server consolidation and virtualization; network infrastructure; unification of voice, teleconferencing, and video communication technologies; and improved infrastructure for collocation of dedicated servers.

Key Roles/Responsibilities:

The IT Operations Group (ITOG), part of the EIT, is responsible for information technology infrastructure, including high performance computing, enterprise storage and advanced telecommunications at FNLCR. ITOG is responsible for the management and operation of a variety of computer systems, involving an architectural range that encompasses the single-user personal computer through to the multi-user, multi-core, large memory computer server utilizing various NAS storage platforms.
  • Perform system management, administration and architectural functions, including requirements analysis, systems configuration and performance monitoring using analysis tools (ex: SolarWinds).
  • Ensure the availability, reliability and security of storage-related platforms and related management systems.
  • Work on complex problems, where considerable judgment and initiative are required in resolving problems and generate documented recommendations to reduce or prevent problem recurrence, and document lessons learned and create RCA (rood cause analysis) processes.
  • Evaluate user needs or problems proactively. Take appropriate action to resolve issues including documentation.
  • Consult with users regarding use of the systems and storage platforms, determine methods and procedures, and design/use on new assignments and advise other IT personnel.
  • Identify and resolve problems across multiple platforms, storage, networks, systems, and data center. This requires multiple team engagement within IT, and Vendor engagement.
  • Install and maintain storage hardware, software, and relevant vendor/support applications.
  • Monitor storage performance and make modifications to the storage software or hardware as necessary including documentation.
  • Contribute to decisions on administrative policies, procedures, product evaluations, and capacity planning.
  • Ensure the integrity and functionality of all data on the platform.
  • Develop schedules and perform regular data protection operations (snapshots, replication, backups, etc.).
  • Participate in the integration of hardware and software within a heterogeneous environment.
  • Develop and monitor data security measures in coordination with the site security office.
  • Establish and maintain hardware and software vendor support contacts, and differentiate between vendor and in-house responsibilities.

Basic Qualifications:

To be considered for this position, you should have the knowledge, skills, and abilities listed below:

  • Possession of Bachelor's degree from an accredited college/university according to the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) or four (4) years relevant experience in lieu of degree. Foreign degrees must be evaluated for U.S. equivalency.
  • In addition to the education requirement, a minimum of eight (8) years of progressively responsible experience related to this position.
  • Extensive storage-related work experience supporting, managing, and engaging with enterprise storage environments.
  • Experience in larger NAS and/or SAN storage system environments (10PB and larger a plus).
  • Experience in managing, designing, and performing technology refresh/replacement projects.
  • Experience installing and maintaining hardware, software, and applications
  • Thorough understanding of IT systems best practices such as ITIL and the implementation of these practices, including the documentation and testing of systems.
  • Ability to proactively and independently troubleshoot problems involving systems, networking, and storage.
  • Experience with any scripting languages. (for example, Bourne and/or C shell and derivatives, PowerShell, Perl, Python, etc.)
  • Experience managing, designing, and troubleshooting centralized storage solutions involving RAID configuration, NFS and CIFS/SMB, S3 protocols, logical volume management, and other pertinent technologies.
  • Basic knowledge of TCP/IP stack and networks, including routing, subnets, VLANs, and host-based firewalls.
  • Ability to communicate effectively to support team efforts.
  • Ability to be consistent with approach and documentation.
  • Strong team collaboration and end user relationship management skills.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance. This position is subject to obtain Public Trust Clearance.

Preferred Qualifications:

Candidates with these desired skills will be given preferential consideration:
  • Knowledge of systems and/or storage administration and design in a scientific environment.
  • Experience with on-prem and/or cloud-based Object Storage provisioning and administration.
  • Experience with installation and management of major Linux distributions such as RedHat, CentOS, or Ubuntu, preferably in a clustered or virtual machine environment.
  • Experience with hardware diagnostics and repair work, test and replacement of power supplies, hard drives, network adapters, memory, CPUs, and other computer components.
  • Knowledge of authentication configuration (Active Directory, LDAP, PAM, etc.)
  • Experience with Big Data provisioning and/or analysis.
  • Experience in the installation and management of modern Windows OS (Windows 10 and/or Windows Server 2016 or later)
  • Exposure and experience with architecting/designing storage environments for a scientific research community and environment.
  • Experience with any phase of architecture.

Expected Competencies:
  • Monitor system performance and adjust hardware and/or software to mitigate problems.
  • Create, review, and update Standard Operating Procedures (SOP), Service Level Agreements (SLA), and other necessary documentation.
  • Update and patch vendor-provided operating systems.
  • Maintain documentation and follow best practices.
  • Follow the weekly/monthly/yearly reporting requirements.
  • Complete timecards, weekly updates, and training in a timely manner without needing prompting and consistently.
  • End User relationship building.
  • Run books and documentation for everything.
  • Team communication and building.
