PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
The Laboratory Animal Sciences Program (LASP) provides exceptional quality animal care and technical support services for animal research performed at the National Cancer Institute at the Frederick National Laboratory for Cancer Research. LASP executes this mission by providing a broad spectrum of state-of-the-art technologies and services focused on the application of genetically engineered and biological animal models of human disease. The Research Associate II will perform a variety of experiments aimed at validation and treatment of mouse cancer models.
KEY ROLES/RESPONSIBILITIES
- Independently perform preclinical studies designed to validate mouse cancer models (drug and immunotherapy efficacy, tolerability, PK and PD studies)
- Implement complex surgical techniques to develop novel cancer models.
- Administration of drugs by IP, IV, SC, or oral gavage routes.
- Establish primary tumor cell lines from mouse tumor tissue.
- Maintain cancer cell lines in culture and perform drug sensitivity assays on cancer cell lines.
- Collection, preparation, and storage of tissue samples, and utilization of tracking databases.
- Perform molecular biology procedures such as nucleic acid extraction and purification, PCR, ELISA, and Western blots.
- Implement and troubleshoot new protocols.
- Modify and update protocols as needed.
- Train preclinical team members in surgical techniques and study requirements.
- Execute experiments independently with guidance from program scientists.
- Maintain proper quality control checks for experiments, assays, and equipment. General laboratory upkeep.
- Compile, analyze, and report scientific data to program scientists.
- Keep accurate and detailed records and documents laboratory operations and data collection.
- Computer/data management, including maintenance of complex Excel spreadsheets, GraphPad Prism and PowerPoint, and additional scientific analysis programs.
- Perform assignments independently and following all applicable regulations, policies, and procedures.
- Work involves the use of potentially hazardous material or may be located in areas where such materials are used.
- Work may require the use of personal protective equipment and requires adherence to strict safety protocols.
- Schedule may include occasional weekend and holiday hours.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
To be considered for this position, you must minimally meet the knowledge, skills, and abilities listed below:
- Possession of a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college/university in a field related to biomedical research or four (4) years equivalent experience in the appropriate field in lieu of degree. Foreign educated candidates who have completed part or all of their education outside of the United States must have their foreign education evaluated by a company-approved accrediting organization to assure that it has met the equivalency of the qualifications of degree work in the United States.
- In addition to educational requirements, a minimum of five (5) years job-related biomedical experience.
- Must be able to obtain and maintain a security clearance.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Candidates with these desired skills will be given preferential consideration:
- M.S. in Biology, Cell Biology, or related field
- Experience with primary tissue culture and cell line maintenance
- Skilled in molecular biology techniques such as nucleic acid extraction and purification, PCR, and Western blots
- Experience with analysis of tumor ultrasound images
- Tumor model experience
- Excellent organizational skills including data tracking and database software
