General Summary:
The OSP Planning Engineer is responsible for creating project plans, long range plans, forecasts, budgets, estimating costs, identifying appropriate materials and equipment, and creating drawings for the placement of fiber optic cables and conduit in aerial and buried environments. The OSP Planning Engineer will also assist in scheduling and planning moves, adds, changes and disconnects to existing infrastructure. This position works closely with the Director of OSP Planning, the OSP Engineering team, contract engineers, PMO, and the Ritter mapping team.
Essential Job Functions:
- Advises and researches new technologies and identifies areas of the plant that need to be upgraded;
- Performs desktop engineering of proposed projects to provide optimum routing alternatives while ensuring the most cost-effective designs are developed for construction projects;
- Provides suggested cable routings, drop, house, or unit count, and proposed pedestal/cabinet locations;
- Provides desktop maps in acceptable formats depicting the tie-in locations and proposed routings developed from records or occasional field visits;
- Presents estimated costs to provide service on assigned projects;
- Performs pre-construction handoff meetings as necessary to ensure proper application of design and planning efforts;
- Reviews design work as necessary to identify potential challenges;
- Approves and provide feedback on OSP change documents submitted by team members;
- Works with OSP design engineers for field verifications of existing plant to provide accurate tie-in points for new plant extensions;
- Researches system plant maps to determine system extension effects on surrounding cable plant and node placement sizing;
- Ensures accuracy of fiber records working in conjunction with mapping and records team;
- Performs other duties as assigned, which are reasonably within the scope of the responsibilities of this job classification.

- Skill in operating various office equipment such as personal computer, various software programs, and telephone systems; Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite
- Skill in problem identification and resolution;

- Skill in reading and interpreting technical documents and forms including work orders, staking sheets, schematics and specification manuals;
- Ability to communicate with customers, employees, and various business contacts in a professional and courteous manner;

- Ability to work independently;
- Ability to make sound decisions using information at hand;
- Ability to work within a team environment.
Education and Experience:
Bachelor's degree in Engineering or a related field and/or five years of telecommunications engineering experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience preferred.
