About the Role

We provide outsourced accounting and financial reporting services to both public and private companies, including mortgage REITs, mortgage finance companies and private equity funds. The Senior Director is responsible for ensuring that the client is provided with accurate and timely services.

What You'll Do

  • Review and assist with the preparation of monthly accounting packages for portfolios consisting of residential mortgage loans, commercial real estate loans and debt/equity securities
  • Oversee preparation of and review of financial statements, including footnote discloures, under historical US GAAP and under the Investment Company Guide for private companies and to the SEC on Forms 10-K and 10-Q for public companies and necessary support
  • Responsible for advising clients on accounting elections and accounting treatment alternatives for investments, derivatives and securitizations/borrowings, and drafting or reviewing technical GAAP memorandum to document such positions.
  • Ensure accuracy, consistency, and timeliness of all financial reporting
  • Ensure reporting is in compliance with legal documents including counterparty agreements and partnership agreements
  • Assist auditors with annual audit and interim work
  • Assist tax teams with REIT and tax compliance
  • Interact and coordinate with the client's staff and other third-party providers on a regular basis
  • Identify reporting issues and communicate corrective actions to be taken by respective party
  • Review or perform month end close, including updates of monthly workbook and financial statement variance analysis, post journal entries and prepare bank and general ledger reconciliations
  • Oversee staff reviewing clients' books and records, reconcile account balances to supporting schedules, and ability to determine the correctness of accounts and propose/post correcting journal entries and supporting work papers and adjusted trial balance under US GAAP
  • Review limited partner and general partners/shareholder allocations, including review of management fee, waterfall and clawback calculations
  • Oversee and manage preparation of partner capital statements as well as capital call and distribution notices
  • Potential exposure or assistance to ad hoc or special accounting projects such as implementation of accounting software, IPO projects, transaction or business process review, forensic investigations, and other financial reporting and asset management reporting assistance
  • Ability to supervise and complete engagements.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's or Master's Degree in Accounting
  • Minimum of 8+ years of experience in GAAP accounting for mortgage loans, debt/equity securities and derivative instruments, preferably with public accounting experience; alternatively, the candidate can have a mix of public accounting (real estate finance focus) and industry experience at a public or private MREIT or real estate finance company
  • Knowledge of portfolio accounting, including loan securitizations and securities accounting; understanding of consolidation accounting and joint venture accounting is preferred
  • Minimum of requisite education toward CPA certification, CPA strongly preferred
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving and organizational skills with attention to detail
  • Strong proficiency in Excel, Word
  • Knowledge of financial statement preparation software such as Wdesk a plus
  • Ability to understand and communicate ideas clearly and effectively both verbally and in written communications
  • Ability to take responsibility for various aspects of projects as well as the ability to suggest improvements and enhancements
  • Self-directed and motivated, with a focus on continuous improvement
  • Demonstrate a flexible and adaptable work style that can prioritize tasks, work on multiple assignments independently or as part of a team and meet tight deadlines
  • Sound knowledge of US Historical GAAP (including fair value option) and SEC reporting, a plus
  • Familiarity with accounting software such as Yardi or MRI is preferred
  • Proficiency in month/quarter/annual closings for US GAAP financial statements and preparation of related working papers or analyses. Knowledge of Investment Company Guide accounting a plus
  • This role is remote but may require travel to clients and FTI office(s)
