Director, Strategic Communications, Public Affairs - Industrials

A Day in the Life as a Director...

As a Director of Public Affairs in the Industrials Sector, you will take an active role in supporting the day-to-day management of client accounts. In this role, you will be responsible for managing both up and down within account teams to appropriately service client communications. You will develop and execute communications strategies to deliver results and meet client expectations, draft documents for client use, and provide perspective to clients on internal, peer, and market developments as such pertains to the media. Additional responsibilities will include, but will not be limited to:

Client Delivery
  • Serve as one of the day-to-day client contact for select accounts; manage the overall quality of work on multiple accounts by demonstrating professional and team leadership
  • Write and edit a variety of materials (e.g., memos, press releases, presentations, emails, media pitches, web content)
  • Demonstrate an understanding of client information, including business strategy, services, stakeholders and competitive landscape
  • Deliver high-quality work focused on client needs
  • Create client-ready deliverables in a timely and efficient manner
  • Take a proactive approach and anticipate client needs
  • Counsel clients about industry, company, and market developments
  • Identify resource needs and work with managers to assign individual responsibilities
  • Support billing procedures to ensure timely and accurate delivery of client invoices
  • Help clients identify and escalate risks in order to act and communicate with integrity

Business Development
  • Maintain solid relationships with clients
  • Work with managers to help clients assess their program needs
  • Assist with ongoing program measurement and progress report development
  • Participate in the generation new business proposals and presentations
  • Identify emerging opportunities to add more value for the client

Practice Leadership
  • Consistently seek ways to improve client service
  • Support the development, production and marketing of thought leadership surrounding emerging trends and issues
  • Anticipate potentially difficult situations and be able to evaluate strategies and alternatives with senior management
  • Demonstrate a willingness to take responsibility for outcomes and to assist others when needed
  • Effectively manage competing demands for time
  • Work with junior staff as a leader and demonstrate mentoring ability; effectively manage individuals and teams and develop relationship-building efforts
  • Understand and live by FTI's values, Code of Ethics and the Strategic Communications Rules of Practice, and work with junior staff to embed these concepts within the firm's culture. What Are We Looking For?
  • Bachelor's degree in relevant industry or field
  • Minimum five years of work experience in communications agency and/or state/federal government experience
  • Superior public policy, writing, editing, and researching skills
  • Travel required to clients and to FTI office(s)
  • COVID Vaccine required*

What Else Are We Looking For?
  • Solid grasp of public relations, including traditional media relations experience, as well as digital and social media program management experience
  • Proven project management skills and the ability to proactively support/counsel key client relationship
  • Strong time and priority management skills and an ability to effectively juggle multiple client projects
  • Demonstrated development of a professional network and experience with media contacts, database tools and pitching media to secure client coverage is required
  • Experience with popular blogging tools (i.e., WordPress), publishing software and other social media platforms (i.e., Twitter) required
  • Desire and ability to work in a fast-paced, multi-tasking, deadline-oriented dynamic environment with regular change
  • Advanced proficiency in PowerPoint, Excel and Word
  • Understanding of Associated Press Style Guidelines
